A Mallorca Road Trip Through the Mountains (Perfect for Winter)
One of the best decisions we made during our winter weekend in Mallorca was renting a car and doing a mountain road trip starting and ending in Palma. The route takes you through some of the island’s most beautiful villages, local roads, and viewpoints — and even in rainy weather, it was absolutely worth it.

Route:
Palma → Andratx → Banyalbufar → Valldemossa → Deià → Sóller → Fornalutx → back to Palma
This route is especially magical because you drive through narrow mountain roads, pass small local towns, and constantly get surprised by views of the sea, cliffs, and greenery.
(Some northern stops like Pollença, Cap de Formentor, and Alcúdia were skipped because it got dark early — but I’ll mention when they’re best to visit.)
Stop 1: Andratx – A Quick & Easy Start
Our first stop was Andratx, perfect for easing into the day.
We didn’t stay long — just enough time to:
walk around the town,
stretch our legs,
and grab breakfast from Bon Dolç Més Natural.
It was simple, calm, and exactly what we needed before continuing the drive. Andratx felt local and quiet — a nice contrast to Palma.
Scenic Stop: Mirador d’en Ricardo Roca 🌈
On the way to the next destination, we stopped at Mirador d’en Ricardo Roca — and honestly, this ended up being one of the highlights of the day.
It had been raining, but just as we arrived, the rain stopped and we were lucky enough to see a rainbow over the mountains and sea. The view was breathtaking and felt very “Mallorca in winter”: dramatic, moody, and beautiful.
Definitely worth stopping, even if just for a few minutes.
Stop 2: Banyalbufar – Blink and You’ll Miss It
Banyalbufar was a very quick stop — around 5 minutes — just enough to see the town and take in the atmosphere.
It’s small, quiet, and perched beautifully against the mountains. Even a short stop here gives you a sense of how different life feels outside the bigger towns.
Stop 3: Valldemossa – Rainy, Romantic & Timeless
Valldemossa was one of the places where we spent the most time — and for good reason.
This town felt romantic, calm, and incredibly charming, especially in the rain. The weather actually suited it perfectly.
What we did:
Got a warm drink and a sweet from Forn i Pastisseria Ca’n Molinas
Walked around the old streets
Visited Iglesia de la Cartuja
The Cartuja of Valldemossa is a former monastery with beautiful architecture and a peaceful garden you can walk through. Even on a rainy day, it felt serene and atmospheric.
Out of all the stops, Valldemossa was one of my favorites — it’s a place you want to slow down in.
Passing Through: Deià & Sóller (Rain Edition)
After Valldemossa, the rain started to get heavier.
We drove toward Deià and Sóller, but unfortunately only saw them briefly from the car.
Even from the drive-by view:
Deià looked stunning, with cafés on beautiful balconies. I really wish we could have stopped — it felt like a place meant for slow coffee breaks and long views.
Sóller also looked lovely, but the weather and time pushed us to continue.
If you’re visiting in spring or summer, when the days are longer and weather more stable, I’d definitely recommend stopping at both.
Final Stop: Fornalutx – Cozy, Warm & Unforgettable
We ended the road trip in Fornalutx — and this town completely stole my heart.
After the rain and mountain driving, Fornalutx felt:
warm,
cozy,
and incredibly welcoming.
We ate at Ca n’Antuna, where we ordered a rice soup that came in a big pot — perfect comfort food for a cold, rainy day. The view from the restaurant was beautiful, making the whole experience even better.
After eating, we walked around the town, soaking in the quiet streets, stone houses, and soft light. It felt like the perfect ending to the day.
Heading Back to Palma
As it started getting darker, we began the drive back to Palma. The routes were incredibly scenic, even at dusk, and the whole day felt like a real adventure — not rushed, not touristy, just immersive.
Extra Stops for Longer Days ☀️
We didn’t visit:
Pollença
Cap de Formentor
Alcúdia
Simply because it got dark early in winter. If you’re visiting in spring or summer, when daylight lasts longer, I’d highly recommend adding these to your route — especially Cap de Formentor for its dramatic views.
Final Thoughts
This Mallorca road trip was:
scenic,
calm,
and full of variety.
Even with rain, it was absolutely worth it. The mountain roads, small towns, local bakeries, and cozy restaurants made it feel authentic and memorable.
If you’re visiting Mallorca and want to see more than just Palma, this route is highly recommended — especially if you enjoy slow travel and beautiful drives.
